Integrated Dharma Study and Practice Program
A Ten Month Intensive with Dave Smith
Monthly on Saturday’s Beginning January 7, 2017
10am – 1pm
This intensive practice and study group is designed for people who are interested in deepening their meditation practice and understanding of the Buddha’s teachings (Dharma). Over the period of 10-months we will meet as a group to learn, discuss and deepen our understanding of the core teachings of the Buddha. We will focus primarily on early Buddhism and material from the Theravada tradition as found in the pages of the Pali Canon.
Study emphasis will be placed on:
1). Four noble truths
2). Eight-fold path
3). Four foundations of mindfulness
4). Four divine abodes of the heart (kindness, compassion, appreciation equanimity)
This study and practice group will meet a total of 10 times at the Against the Stream Meditation center in Santa Monica for a period of 3 hours, 10am-1pm. These sessions will be an opportunity for the group to discuss the literature that has been assigned and to explore the personal implications of these teachings into our lives and relationships.
There will be educational lecture, guided reflections, meditation practices, intimate group process and much more. Between each session, specific books and reading material will be assigned; there will be Dharma talks to listen to and reflective papers to write. The opportunity to connect with each other as well as the greater Against the Stream Sangha will be encouraged and emphasized as part of this process.
This course is a rare opportunity to study the Dharma and apply what you are learning into your practice and every day life. All participants who sign up for this study group will be encouraged and expected to attend all classes and participate in all aspects of the course.
