What’s New at Against the Stream?
October 5 We are so proud to announce the installation of 8-Fold Path, an original art piece created especially for Against the Stream. Read about the artist and the work, here. And come visit it on Melrose.
July 8 We have new sitting groups at the Melrose Center. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 7-7:45, there will be a silent meditation. This is a wonderful way to begin your days. Also, starting July 12, we will have a community-led silent meditation and discussion from 6-7:00pm. Come down for some meditation and conversation and get to know your community. June 4 It's true that InsightLA has moved to a different location, but we are still at 1001a Colorado Ave. in Santa Monica. There have been some zoning questions, but we will be staying in this space for the forseeable future. All classes currently scheduled for Santa Monica are still happening. We are planning to hold a five-day silent meditation retreat in Joshua Tree, Nov 18-22. We're working out the arrangements, but save the date. This will be led by Noah and others. The details will be announced in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks to all of you who made our first birthday celebration and fundraiser such a rousing success. And thanks to you who could not make it but who sent best wishes and support. We could not have done this without you and look forward to our next year growing our community. Against the Stream is a public corporation and therefore our books are open for all to look at. If you are interested you can see how we did in 2008, and what we are projecting for 2009. These are challenging moments for all, us included, but trust we can do this together. Take a look at Who We Are to see what we've accomplished, where we're going, and how you can help. We've also revised our premiums for monthly supporters so check them out. Starting
in March we will begin to have teachers from different traditions
conducting the Sunday morning meditation classes. This will give the
Sangha an opportunity to taste the different flavors of Buddhism. We're
thrilled to announce that Brad Warner, author of Hard Core Zen, Sit Down and Shut Up, and his new book, Zen Wrapped in Karma Dipped in Chocolate, will
be leading zazen once a month beginning March 15. The rest of the
schedule is not confirmed yet, but we hope to have teachers from the
Tibetan tradition, monastics, and others. Noah will still teach at
least one Sunday a month. Check the calendar for details. We appreciate your support and patience as we continue to grow. This is your Sangha and any input you have is deeply appreciated. Thank you for making our first year so rewarding and thank you for joining us moving forward.
