This Study group is designed for
people who are interested in deepening their understanding of the Buddha’s
teachings.  Over the period of
nine-months we will meet as a group to learn or deepen our
understanding of some of the core teachings of the Buddha.

The training will be a comprehensive study of the
Buddha’s life and teachings including:

  • The Four Noble Truths
  • Four Foundations of Mindfulness
  • The Four Divine Abodes of the Heart

The
Study group will meet four times at Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation
Society
in Los Angeles for a period of three days each session. The three-day
trainings will be opportunities for the group to discuss the literature that
has been assigned and to explore the personal implications that these
teachings have for our lives. There will be lectures, guided reflections and
small group processing. Between each session, two or three books will be
assigned in preparation for the next session. All participants
will be asked to write a journal about the material they are studying and how
it is applicable to their lives.  Some
longer written papers may also be assigned.

Books that will be covered in the first meeting: Life of the Buddha by Bhikkhu Nanamoli, Buddhism: A Concise Introduction by Huston Smith and Spirit of the Buddha by Martine Batchelor. We have these in stock in Melrose and Santa Monica. Or you can access them via the Amazon link here.
