LA EcoDharma is an “intersangha” group of practitioners from several Buddhist communities across L.A., who are committed to taking wise action on environmental issues, including the climate change crisis. Cheryl Slean, an ATS teacher, is a co-organizer of this group, so feel free to ask her about it the next time you see her!
While fear over climate disruption often spurs denial and ends in panic or mental paralysis, it may equally well give rise to samvega, a sense of urgency leading to wise decisions to avert the crisis. Everything depends on how we metabolize our fear.

In recent months, alarming data has been coming in that shows global warming-related impacts to the Earth’s ocean, glacier and climate systems are accelerating much more quickly than was previously predicted. At the same time, something historically unprecedented is happening: an extraordinary number of organizations, large and small, have sprung up to work for peace, social justice, and sustainability– over 2 million worldwide, according to Paul Hawken, in Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Social Movement in History Is Restoring Grace, Justice, and Beauty to the World.
Our intention for LA EcoDharma is to nurture participation in this movement for just & sustainable change, by building community, by educating ourselves, by engaging in actions for climate justice, and other creative ways to live the Dharma in wise relationship to our Earth.
Join us at our next meeting! We’re calling this our self-education month. We encourage you to bring some topic to share, some information, perspective, learning, or insight. Please don’t feel you need to do any homework. You can just mention an organization you like or your awareness of mindstates that arise around climate change, or just come to listen. We will also talk about forming a discussion group for those planning to take OneEarth Sangha’s online “Ecosattva” training that starts in September.
Please join our LA EcoDharma email list to RSVP for these events, and to be informed of other upcoming events and actions!
