Off the Cushion
Our Articles of Incorporation state that a commitment to social action and service to others is an integral part of our community. Quietly, many of our members, facilitators and teachers have been volunteering their time in myriad ways both inside ATS and out. As we talk to these individuals we are amazed by their generosity and compassion and it is our intention to feature their work on this page with the hope that we can make it easier for sangha members to get involved.
We have a broad and diverse community with different interests and skills and we invite you to join us in our commitment to ease suffering and bring compassion wherever we can. We would also love to hear about what you’re doing or would like to do. Let us know and then we’ll see if we can build a network to help each other help.
What’s Happening Right Now!
Environmental Awareness and Climate Change Response: Against the Stream is getting involved with other Buddhist groups in the Los Angeles area to address climate change response and other forms of environmental and sustainability awareness. Cheryl Slean is organizing this group and invites those of you who are interested in education, reflection, practice and engaged action around these compelling topics to join her. More info.
Insight on the Inside: Sangha members with at least one year’s practice become pen pals for prisoners who write to Against the Stream looking for support with the meditation and dharma practice. For information on this project, or to volunteer, please visit Insight on the Inside.
Others in the Sangha: Many members of our community are volunteering their time or creating ways to be of service. Take a moment to read about what they’re doing and maybe it’s something you’d like to be involved with as well. Don’t just sit there, do something.
If you have a project you’d like to tell us about, please fill out THIS FORM.
