A Late Night Program with Joseph Rogers

Most important holidays in the Buddhist tradition are marked by the light of the full moon, which represents the enlightenment (the cleansing of the defiled mind) of Siddhartha Gautama.   These days of observance (Uposatha) are times of opportunity for practitioners of the Dharma to intensify their practice, to deepen their wisdom, and to express public commitment to the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha) and to the Precepts (the practice of renunciation dedicated to the development of skillful behavior).

It is our intention to offer a full-moon ceremony quarterly as an opportunity for the Against the Stream community (Sangha) to renew their commitment to the path of practice, renunciation, and wisdom that so many in our community respond to each New Year during our intention-setting ceremony, and to create a meaningful framework of ceremony that inspires our community to continue to envision ourselves as deeply engaged with the Dharma in the fabric of our lives as lay practitioners.

Our full moon ceremonies will occur at Against the Stream Santa Monica from 10pm to 12am.  Each full moon ceremony will include periods of silent sitting and walking, and a teaching. Members of the community will have an opportunity to take refuge in the Triple Gem and to renew commitment to the practice of the Precepts.  Additionally, each ceremony will contain an element specific to the appropriate cycle of the year.

Please feel welcome to bring a guest. We look forward to seeing you there.

3/1/18 Thursday Sangha Day

Sangha day commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 enlightened monastics to hear the first recitation of the Patimokka (the guidelines of the monastic order). It is the second most important Buddhist holiday. Sangha is the Buddhist term for the community and this day celebrates the community that provides refuge for our practice.  Participants may bring a candle to offer as a gift to another participant symbolizing the community’s support for their practice and awakening.  Come be a part of our community and take refuge!

5/29/18 Tuesday Vesak (Buddha’s Birthday)

Vesak celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha, all of which are said to have occurred on a full moon.  Vesak is the primary holiday in all Buddhist traditions and is celebrated around the world. As part of this celebration we will be “bathing the Buddha,” pouring water over an image of the young Siddhartha Gautama pointing to the sky. He is reported to have said, “Above heaven and below heaven, none are equal to me. This is my last birth. There will be no more rebirths.” In this ceremony we reset our intention to take refuge in the practice and our own potential to awaken.

7/27/18 Friday Dharma Day

Dharma day marks the occasion of the historical Buddha’s first teaching or setting the wheel of dharma in motion over 2500 years ago. We come together on this day and express gratitude for the teachings and teachers in our life that support us.  The ceremony will include reading and reflecting upon the suttas (Buddhist teachings) that provide a refuge for our understanding and well-being.

10/24/18 Wednesday Kathina (Dana Day)

Kathina marks the ends of the rains retreat, and is a celebration of the importance of generosity. As Kathina falls near to All Hallows Eve, Dia de los Muertos, Samhain, and Abhidhamma Day (when it is said that the Buddha travelled to Tushita heaven to teach his mother), we will spend some time reflecting on and remembering those near to us who have died and what gifts they offered to our lives.  Please feel invited to bring a picture, or an item that represents those who have passed, for our altar that evening.  Just as our ancestors and loved ones gave so much to us, we dedicate the merit of our practice to the well-being of others.
