Heart Sutra Workshop
February 11, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm PST
A Daylong Retreat with Michael Owens
The Heart Sutra is by far the most widely used Buddhist text in the world today. It is chanted daily and nightly by monastics and lay devotees throughout China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan and Tibet, and by many Buddhists in America. A short text, less than a page long, the Heart Sutra is praised for being the most expedient expression of the Buddha’s highest teachings, yet its origins are as mysterious as its meaning. This workshop is an in-depth journey into the heart of the Heart Sutra.
The day will include:
– A dynamic visual presentation that illuminates the history and philosophy of the Heart Sutra, with extraordinary tales about its discovery.
– A deep dive into the many layers of meaning contained within the sutra.
– A look at multiple versions and translations of the Heart Sutra with the goal of creating our own unique translation.
Also included in the class is a simple introduction to the Chinese language and a beginner’s lesson in Buddhist calligraphy.
Open to all.
