Intro to Buddhist Meditation: Ancient Practice for a Happier Modern Life

October 23, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm PDT

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:30pm on Monday, repeating until November 6, 2017

We’re not designed by natural selection to always see the world clearly. We’re not designed by
natural selection to be happy. And it turns out that meditation – and in particular, Buddhist
meditation grounded in Buddhist philosophy – is very well-equipped to address that problem.

—Robert Wright, author of Why Buddhism Is True: The Science
and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment

Want to learn how to navigate the ups and downs of life with more ease and less stress?
Become more emotionally intelligent, responsive and resilient? Develop a capacity for being
fully present in your life and relationships, and less dependent on distracting yourself to find
peace? This class will offer an introduction to the original practice of mindfulness meditation,
as taught by the enlightened Buddha from his directly realized insights about suffering and the
end of suffering—and how anyone can get there. Even scientists like the one quoted above are
recognizing that meditation grounded in the Buddhist teachings is an effective path to easing
our mental anguish, by learning to see it clearly in a tried-and- true process that naturally
reveals intuitive insight and the compassionate, wakeful heart.
Join us for an engaging and effective 4-week introduction to these proven practices that
continue to offer the peace the Buddha promised, even in our crazy modern world.
Class is suitable for both new meditators and those who want a refresher.

Class dates: Oct 16, 23, 30, Nov 6

Cost: $20 per class or $70 if paid in advance. There will be an opportunity to offer DANA to the teacher at each class (teachers receive a portion of the reg fee and are supported by dana).  Some scholarships and work-study are available. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
