Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation

A Half Day Retreat with Matthew Brensilver.
Mindfulness is a human capacity that can be developed through practice. It refers to the ability to receive momentary experience in a clear, balanced way. But mindfulness is not merely a technique we use to enhance our well-being. In an important sense, our life is found in the moment – this is the only place where we can actually experience what it’s like to be human. As we become more intimate with the moment, we feel closer to our own life, less alienated, and more free. During the morning together, we’ll learn approaches to stabilize the mind and connect deeply with our experience. The program will include guided meditations, practice suggestions, and time for dialogue and discussion.

Matthew Brensilver served as a Buddhist chaplain at USC for four years and teaches about the intersection of mindfulness and psychotherapy at UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center. Matthew was trained by Noah Levine and teaches at Against the Stream. He is currently in the Spirit Rock/IIMS teacher training program and is mentored by Gil Fronsdal. He conducts research on addiction treatment at the UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine.
