Against the Stream’s People of Color Retreat Initiative (ATSPOCRI) is a three-year project that invites self-identified People of Color to attend no-cost residential and non-residential retreats. The initiative is an extension of ATS’s POC Sangha which held its inaugural non-residential retreat the weekend of September 15th – 17th, 2017 in Los Angeles. The non-residential retreat was well received with more than 50 practitioners participating in the weekend of meditation practice and discussion.
Against the Stream’s People of Color Sangha fosters mutual support and understanding among people of color who find nourishment and inspiration in the teachings and practices of Buddhism. The group intends to provide a safe, brave and cherished space to openly discuss the experience of living and navigating oppressive, racial, biased, social structures. ATS hosts a weekly facilitator-led sitting group in Los Angeles that has grown by more than 60% following the September 2017 non-residential retreat.
ATS’s POC Retreat Initiative will invite People of Color to engage in retreat practice as a means of deepening awareness, thereby fostering a mindful response to oppressive social structures. In addition to the weekly sitting groups and discussions, the initiative offers two no-cost retreats per-year (one non-residential retreat and one seven-day residential retreat).
